Nook — A Christmas Gift Review.

I’ve never had any interest in an e-reader of any type. Sure, I’ve heard of them. But what would I need one of those for? And anyways, I can’t afford one!

But I got one for Christmas. It was a gift from my Father-In-Law. A Nook (by Barnes & Noble) e-reader. And a pink case for it!

So, what can a Nook do?

Well, either from your actual device or from a computer, you can download books for it. The books are cheaper than their actual soft/hard cover books, but still can run you $10 or more. I do like the option of adding giftcards to your account and using them whenever you want to download a book.

It’s much more than just an e-reader, though. Since I recently got rid of my cell phone (bye bye, Iphone!), the Nook is a great way for me to be able to have apps that do things — like Facebook, Twitter, and more. Plus I downloaded some excellent “mom” apps. A family planner, calendars, to-do lists and more. Great things to keep me organized.

Also, I set up all of my email accounts to go directly to my Nook. So with one click I can check all of my emails at once. It makes it great for me to keep up with everything without sitting down at my laptop during the day.

Plus, you can load pictures, music, use Netflix, Pandora and more. And it’s small enough that you can toss it in your diaper bag without worrying about it being too big to lug around! It totally takes the place of my cell phone and does more than I ever imagined it would!

And one more thing, going back to books. You can find “Nook friends” and lend each other books. The one downside — once you lend a book out, it’s no longer “lend-able”, which i dislike. Why can I only lend a book that belongs to me out ONE time?

We don’t travel much but I definitely see it useful to be able to throw ONE thing in my bag and have as many books with me as I want. And another cool option — you can read a book outloud and record YOUR voice! So when the baby wants to hear mommy read a book to him, one button and he can flip along and hear my voice! I love that feature!

And as a mom, I spend a LOT of time underneath a nursing/sleeping baby. Before, I couldn’t use a laptop or read a book without disturbing him. But I can hold my Nook in one hand and flip through a book, an application, the internet, Facebook, Twitter… all without waking the sleeping baby! LOVE IT!
