It’s Music Festival Season.

It’s festival season and millions of people all over the world are heading out to hit their favorite festivals. Did you know that the average festival goer is 28 years old — and more than 50% of them are females? Or that only 19% of them have children, but 46% of them are single and “unattached.”  This includes festivals you may have heard of, like Lollapalooza and Coachella.

Music festivals have been around for ages, ever since the Ancient Egyptians had religious festivals in 4,500 BCE. And attendance to these festivals just continues to increase, from 100,000 people in 1924 at the Ole Time Fiddlers and Bluegrass Festival to 1 million people in 1985 at Live Aid.

The average revenue of a large venue festival is approximately $10 to $40 million. And, boy, do tickets sell fast! Coachella 2012 tickets sold out in 3 hours. And those tickets sell for about $349 a piece! If you’re hosting a festival and are looking for event supplies and concession machines, check out equipsupply.com.

Finding Low Income Housing

There are more people out there than you think that are considered “low income.” If you make less than $40,000 each year you are considered to be in the low income bracket. And I can guarantee — everyone reading this right now either falls into that category themselves or knows someone close to them who may.

Finding low income housing in today’s economy is actually easier than you think, though. There are places you can go to get help. And while there are qualifications you have to meet, it is out there.  (Qualifications usually include things like proof of low income, proof of hardship, and verification of the number of dependents living with you)

One place that you can visit to get help in looking for housing is www.lowincome.org. They offer a large directory that almost guarantees something in your area. It features the most current listings of both low income and affordable housing. Programs are a combination of both government agencies and non-profit organizations.

The website also has a page of resources that you may find useful, along with help with food stamps, low credit loans, foreclosures, and more.

Bargain Hunting

[This guest post from Doris Dillon.]

Since I am a stay at home mom, I feel responsible for making sure that my house runs smoothly, and that we get the best deals possible on things we need. I know my husband doesn’t mind, but I still feel a little guilty that I am not bringing in any income anymore. I am diligent about checking the grocery store circulars for what is on sale, and I make sure to get all of our household goods at the best price possible. I clip coupons, and also go to different stores for different things. I shop online a lot, and buy most of our clothes and shoes at a deep discount too. Since I work hard at it, it has become easier and easier. One of my friends that knows I am a bargain hunter told me I should take a look at http://www.cabletelevision.net/ to see if I could get a better deal on our cable package. I had never thought about switching to satellite TV to save, but it looks like we will be able to save a bundle.

TV at schools.

{Guest post written by my buddy Keith Kramer}

At my children’s elementary school, if they get to school before 7:30, they go into a room and watch tv. I’m sure they have something like DIRECT TV, so they probably have an “educational” show playing, but I’d really prefer my kids didn’t start their day watching television. I have to be at work across town at 8:00, so I drop the kids off at 7:15. That means they watch tv for 45 minutes every morning. I know from experience at home that when the watch tv, they completely zone out, as if they are hypnotized. I’m no teacher, but it doesn’t make sense to me to get kids brains ready for learning by plugging them into the television. I think a much more useful activity would be playing quietly with puzzles, reading books, or coloring. Or honestly, even just laying with their heads down listening to classical music. I am thinking about bringing this up at the next PTO meeting, but I’m sensitive to coming across as one of “those” moms, which I’m really not.

Stay at Home Mom

Contributed by Johnny Graves

Being a stay at home mom was fun while it lasted but BOY was I bored. I love my crazy kids, don’t get me wrong, but sitting at home all day with nothing to do but laundry and cooking made me a crazy person – I had to find something else once the kids were all in school all day. Now I work from home as a writer and it’s been the best thing that ever happened to us. I get all the benefits of being a stay at home mom and I can still be totally available to my family when they need me but I don’t have to worry about my mind turning into mush. I’ve actually got my own home office which is nice and a clear internet 4g connection so I can actually work while parked in the carpool line, if you can believe it, and my husband really likes all the extra income I’m bringing in. I love doing this job and not being tied to a desk – it’s the best of both worlds!
